Safety & Operations

Your safety is our highest priority. The Dominica Cable Car is built and operated to the most rigorous international safety standards.

    Engineering Standards

    • EN 12929 Certified: The system meets the highest European ropeway safety standard, covering design, manufacture, installation, and operation.
    • Doppelmayr D-Line: Built by the world leader in ropeway technology with over 15,400 installations in 96 countries.
    • Hurricane Resilient: Support towers and stations are engineered as climate-resilient infrastructure, hardened against the high-wind events that the region experiences.
    • Seismic Design: Foundations are engineered for Dominica's volcanic terrain with seismic-resistant specifications.

    Real-Time Monitoring

Our comprehensive IoT monitoring system continuously tracks:

    • Wind speed and direction at every tower
    • Cable tension and vibration levels
    • Cable car cabin load and passenger count
    • Ambient temperature and visibility
    • Seismic activity in the volcanic zone

If any parameter exceeds safe thresholds, the system automatically slows or stops operations until conditions normalize.

    Emergency Procedures

    • Rescue System: A dedicated evacuation cable car cabin can reach any point on the line within 15 minutes.
    • Communication: Every cable car cabin is equipped with two-way intercom and GPS tracking.
    • Medical: First aid stations at both terminals, with trained paramedic staff on site during all operating hours.
    • Backup Power: Diesel generators ensure cable car cabins can be brought to the nearest station in the event of a power interruption.

    Operating Conditions

    • Wind Limit: Operations pause when sustained winds exceed 60 km/h
    • Lightning: Operations suspend when lightning is detected within 10 km
    • Visibility: Reduced-speed operation available in fog and mist conditions
    • Volcanic Activity: Continuous monitoring via the Dominica Seismic Research Centre; enhanced protocols activated at elevated alert levels

    Staff Training

All operations staff undergo Doppelmayr-certified training programmes including ropeway operations, emergency evacuation procedures, first aid, and guest safety protocols. Recertification is required annually.

    Inspections

The cable car undergoes daily pre-operation inspections, weekly mechanical checks, monthly structural inspections, and annual comprehensive audits by independent European ropeway inspectors.
